Oscar Edelstein is an original contemporary composer, pianist and researcher from Argentina, known for creativity and inventiveness, and frequently described as leading Latin America's avant-garde.
It's hard to pigeon-hole his music into one style and he is most known for crossing the lines between genres.
“To remember is to make yourself anew.
To know is to become rigid.
To create is to remember,
without knowledge,
something that has not happened."
Oscar Edelstein
Music & Science
In fascination with the dialogue between art and science, Edelstein continually develops new ways to think about composition, pitch and harmony. This includes creating a system of control and notation of the acoustic space, which he calls The Acoustic Grid, and with a team of scientists making an entirely acoustic system of amplification using the scientific principal of Sonic Crystals.
The project has received multiple research grants from the prestigious National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) and Fund for Scientific and Technological Investigation (FONCYT) and their shared investigation has resulted in many papers in key scientific journals such as Applied Acoustics, Journal of New Music Research, The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, and Perception to name but a few.

"La Carta Imaginaria" (The Imaginary Letter) is an opera by Oscar Edelstein in the form of a musical poem. It premiered in "Sala Williams", Centro Nacional de la Música Buenos Aires in 2014 as part of "Ciclo Iberoamericano de Ópera Contemporánea" at the Centro Nacional de la Música (Buenos Aires), commissioned by Ministerio de Cultura de la Nación. The multimedia was conceived by Deobrah Claire Procter, assisted by Jimena Chamorro, specifically for the historic main hall of the National Library of Argentina now un-used but famously where Borges once worked. The lighting of Fernando Chacoma in one key moment highlighted the beautiful ornate glass ceiling, and as these rehearsal photos show, the general rehearsal was cut short by a power cut. [See more]

Teatro Acustico / Acoustic Theatre: Masterclass
“Acoustic Theatre: Musical Composition of the Space” is a masterclass for composers where Oscar Edelstein discusses his concepts of Teatro Acústico (Acoustic Theatre) in relation to both music, theatre and performance, relating from the acoustic experiments of the Venetian masters up to references of the works of Mahler, Wagner, Debussy, Schónberg, Berg, Stockhausen, Ligetti and Nono in a seminar that examined the imaginary, literary, and philosophical configurations and generation of the sense of space.
The seminar examins compositional concepts such as gesture, image, memory and the creation of sensation of perspective, including Edelstein’s ideas for an architecture designed specially for musical works with Sonic Crystals and “The Sonic Crystal Room.”

Comparisons have made between Edgar Varèse and Astor Piazzolla, or from Frank Zappa to John Cage, but really what speaks about the music of the ENS is its driving rhythm and relentless quest for originality.
Since 1997, the ensemble has been recognized as a research group and is part of the research project, led by Oscar Edelstein, at Quilmes University (Argentina), "Teatro Acústica" / Acoustic Theatre which is formed like a live music lab of musicians, composers, artists and technicians, where each member works gather new skills and multiply their knowledge of the art of contemporary music, training together intensively to "extend" the limits of their musical technique, develop new ways of playing, and to create the sensation of what Edelstein calls "Composition in the Act", or in the moment.

... a strong piece of new music for orchestra and live electronics from Argentina's Oscar Edelstein which the Sinfonietta premieres. The rhythmical, multilayered sound fields develop like waves. Edelstein’s close woven music, continuing the tradition of Edgar Varèse, has a force which goes under the skin with great vitality.

The electronic part takes the game of the orchestra into another space, another world, another sound universe, like a dream, like a recollection, or how it looks through a kaleidoscope, a prism with various refractions. A powerful percussion mechanism machine was in action, concentrated beams of sound of stream over the listener. It was exciting to hear such avant-garde new music from Latin America.

An unpredictable journey around a class of sonorous poetry… From the most tenuous & crystalline, up to the real explosion, it’s a fundamental disc, for its importance & originality but, especially, for its power of communication.

It's musical in physical sense, authentic dithyrambic music, realized simultaneously with milimetric precision by the Ensemble that Edelstein directs like one possessed.

The textural work of the ENS gives witness to how they have metabolised “Atmosphères”[Ligeti] making it seem aged. The enveloping dynamic crosses the space and generates its own discourse. The notation of the composer isn’t a code on paper. He “writes”, a kind of ideogram, over the body of the interpreters, who through their instruments and a base of arduous rehearsals, translate a protocol of signals designed by Edelstein. This language is essentially theatrical. The conductor uses the hands and the body as if they were connected with the musicians through sensors. “The ENS like a new instrument in itself requires and needs new instrumentalist, who also must be trained in a new way of playing”, says Edelstein.

With the ENS, Edelstein has found an "instrument" capable of making electro acoustic music, but with a blood like grip. The complex polyrhythmic textures and tímbres are the platform to launch the exploration of the spacein three dimensions, an obsession that, now, Edelstein can register in a top format...

To develop this new musical battle between creation and technology [Edelstein] can count on an invincible instrumental fleet, the ENS.

The choice of instruments can be easily associated to the world of rock, but it is only a sound-colour as the group is impelled by Edelstein to explore zones that go much further, for example, than the advanced experience of Robert Fripp.

One of the most interesting composers of the intermediate generation... [with an] obsession for complex sonorous textures and a careful control of the form are present... if something defines the musical production of Edelstein it is the monumental and complex character of his discourse The multiplicity of readings and approaches that his work permits means that the mere description of their components only partially reflect his sonorous universe... in an hour of music without breaths or concessions the work of the members of the ENS was really outstanding.
